Koshas कोश

Kosha is a sanskrit word that means sheath or layer and refers to the different levels of awareness that exist in each of us. These layers color our perception of reality and this appearance or illusion that obscures reality is known as maya. In yoga the path to self-realization (samadhi) is a progression from the outer layer Annamayakosha (physical apparent sheath) to the inner layer of Anandamayakosha (bliss apparent sheath) and from there to the realization of the Self (Atman). The Self lies at the core of our being and is surrounded by the koshas like the rings of an onion or a series of differently colored shades around a lamp.
